New Generation Of Plant Pots

Brooklyn studio The Principals has designed metal plant pots that can be piled up to create a "modular vertical garden".

The planters are made from sheets of aluminium or pre-rusted steel that are folded into triangles to form a container. Pots can be stacked together in different arrangements like Lego, leaving spaces for plants to grow from their tops.
With the help of tiny triangular corners, these planters can be easily attached one to another both horizontally and vertically. They just need to be fixed with wing nuts and bolts. It takes imagination to create various sculptures from the pots and there are hundreds of options. For example, at New York design week the pots were transformed into an arch.

"Prism Planters are a modular vertical garden system that can create cost-efficient green walls and easily customizable designs," The Principals director Drew Seskunas told Dezeen. The designers claim that their innovative pots were inspired by a modular constructivism – a style of sculpture based on repetitive elements that grew in the 1950s and 60s. Each is fabricated by laser-cutting the metal, which is then folded by a press-brake and riveted together, or flat-packed for easy transportation. Once assembled, a triangular gap is left inside to provide room for a six-inch-tall plant pot and a drainage system for water underneath.

"I wanted to use a material that was both super durable but could feel light and accentuate the faceted geometry of the system," said Seskunas. "Anodised aluminium sheeting is an extremely durable finish commonly used for custom doors and window frames to imply solid metal. I thought it would interesting to subvert its normal use as a faux finish and instead play with it as a folded hollow vessel."

The company provide several types of finishes including matte black, mirrored gold and silver, or brushed gold and silver. With green tops of plants metal constructions look fancy and can become a great designer solution. In spite of the fact that aluminium and steel were primarily chosen to be perfect for outdoors, the pots does not look massive and are definitely suitable for indoors too.

"The system is simple enough for anyone to use, but geared specifically towards urban environments where vertical gardens make efficient use of limited space, while adding much needed greenery to the urban landscape," Seskunas said.

The pots were first unveiled in 2017 as a pyramid structure in the courtyard of Brooklyn creative venue A/D/O, followed by a similar presentation at the Bronx River Arts Center.

The Principals are an anti-disciplinary design studio located in Brooklyn, NY. Formed in 2012 by an architect and an industrial designer, the studio is driven by the tension between the tectonic detail of the small scale and the conceptual fluidity of the large scale. Often inspired by the natural world, The Principals create projects that build bridges between people and their environment.
