Perfect Fit for Poltrona Frau and Ferrari

Office chairs featured in Milan put executives in the driver's seat.

Excitement about office furniture isn't usually what brings people to Italy, but the country is also home to a passion for style, design—and the Ferrari brand.
During the Salone del Mobile show held in Milan in April, a celebration of the latest creations for interior spaces, a new office chair that captured the essence of Ferrari's appeal was unveiled.

It was born of the partnership between Ferrari Design and Poltrona Frau, the 100-year-old furniture company founded in Turin whose name is synonymous with elegance – and a few Ferrari auto interiors. The show exhibit featured a Ferrari vehicle alongside the "Cockpit" chairs in black and a get-noticed fire engine red, presented with a 3D projection installation to wow the crowd.
Poltrona Frau has worked with automotive industry leaders in the past, and they've been creating high-end Ferrari vehicle interiors for decades. This time, though, the "Cockpit" chair takes its seat in the executive suite. "This is an office chair that captures the excitement, speed and dynamism of the driver's seat, as well as the passion for racing," explains Poltrona Frau, describing its hybrid chair and contemporary design: "A blend of automotive know-how and the culture of living."

The chair was designed by Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Design team behind cars like the LaFerrari Aperta, the GTC4Lusso and the 812 Superfast. "Cockpit" comes in two styles, the President and the Executive. Both are carefully designed for the optimal body-seat experience that high performance drivers seek, while appealing to the same concentration, intuition and quick reflexes an energetic CEO needs.
The materials – including the aluminium glass fiber, alutex – are the same used in building Ferrari cars. The exterior shell uses the alutex or a carbon fiber, and the swivel device relies on the same design and mechanical inputs that the steering wheel does. The five-spoke base also is made from aluminium in either powder-coated or polished styles. The leather upholstery was selected to reflect the colors and the finishes of Scuderia, Classica and Inedita, three tailor-made service lines for the customized cars.

The central band on the seat upholstery, along with the careful detail stitching, is the signature of the racing seat and the office chair. Yet it is, of course, the prancing horse on the back of the headrest that cuts beyond the other details to identify the Ferrari brand and the office-chair creation as truly aligned with the vehicle.
Both chairs are designed with a reclining base and seat, integrated with two different backrests. The President is the "managerial model," and features a high backrest with impressive support for the top half of the body. It is inspired by the ergonomics of competitive racing seats, with between 135 and 142 centimeters of back support. The Executive, with its lower range of 105 to 112 centimeters in height and a more narrow back, is intentionally meant to ensure more freedom of movement and work flexibility.

The base of each model measures at least 65 centimeters to ensure stability and smooth motion, although the President is a tad bigger to work with the higher back support on the model. Both chairs are slightly curved, creating a "cockpit" experience with just the right blend of firmness and freedom.

The "Cockpit" is offered in a range of colors, and can be customized for materials selection as well.
