Badoit/Perrier Aluminium Cans

Badoit's move to include aluminium in its repertoire corresponds to rapidly expanding global sales for the iconic French brand, whose market has expanded from 40 to 110 countries in the span of just five years.

French mineral water giant Badoit (part of the Danon Group) has become the newest beverage company to embrace aluminium cans for its products, embarking on what the site manager at Badoit's source in Saint-Galmier, France referred to as the company's largest project of innovation in the past twenty years.
Badoit's market has expanded from 40 to 110 countries in the span of just five years. Even though 85 percent of sales still come from France, these new export markets are becoming the key to Badoit's future growth. The new 33cl "slim cans" are aimed primarily at the key 25-34 demographic, which demands a drink it can take "on the go" or use for snacking. The Badoit brand, which was first launched in 1837, sees the switch to aluminium as a critical way to reach these young customers.

Over the course of a year, 50 employees worked at the highest level of discretion to install a new production line for aluminium cans. Badoit's multimillion Euro investment in the new facilities will allow it to produce tens of millions of slim cans alongside its existing glass and plastic bottles. The new slim cans, which will also be available in a highly-carbonated "red" format as well as in lemon and lime flavors, are expected to help the company beat its previous record of 330 million bottles sold in 1995.

Prior to the installation of the new production line for aluminium cans, Badoit's last major investment in its facilities was to begin customize its glass bottle labels for specific markets. To date, these have included limited-edition (and best-selling) bottles dedicated to Paris, Brittany, Lyon, Bordeaux, and the French Riviera.

Listening closely to our customers, we have noted that the diversification of gastronomy and current eating habits have led to an increased demand for on-the-go formats. At the same time, customers want the brand's signature design. This is what we offer today with Badoit's sleek can.

Aluminium, both in can and in foil form, is already widely used by food and beverage companies for its unparalleled ability to protect products from the elements and for its infinite recyclability. Badoit is not the first French mineral water company to make the switch, either.

Perrier, for its part, launched a 25cl "slim can" in the American and Canadian markets in 2012 and was already producing 100 million of them in 2013.
